SATARA : The special squad of the Satara police on Monday foiled a dacoity attempt at a jewellery shop following the arrest of five people.
The police have identified the suspects as Tapas Urao (32), Gopi Sartara 928), Suraj Kole (24), Mainuddin Sarkar (36), all from West Bengal, and Nanak Paswan (22) from Bihar. Acting on a tip-off, a team led by inspector Subhash Anirudha laid a trap and nabbed the suspects.
Investigations revealed that all the suspects were stationed in Satara for one month.
They had hatched a plan to loot the Oswal jewellery shop at Sadashiv Peth here.
Deputy superintendent of police Sadanand Patil told TOI: "The suspects had taken up jobs at the jewellery shop. They had conducted recce of the shop and decided to enter the shop by breaking the rear wall."
Patil said that after getting the tip, the police were closely watching the suspects since Friday. "We had also mounted cameras behind the shop. During the wee hours of Monday, the gang arrived behind the shop. They had come with gas cutters, LPG cylinders and oxygen cylinders. However, before they could do anything we arrested them."
The gang was involved in several dacoities in the state, said superintendent of police Vithhal Jadhav.
The investigating team comprised assistant inspector Ramesh Bhame and constables Dilip Ahire, Ramesh Dhane, Prakash Ghanvat and Baban Pawar.
