PUNE: Five people were injured after a Mumbai-bound private luxury bus fell into a roadside trench on Satara road early on Monday. According to the Sahkarnagar police, the Parmale Travels bus plying on the Kolhapur-Mumbai route fell into the roadside trench near Walvekar Estate around 3.45 am. Those injured in the accident are Tanaji Kurane (52), Shashikala Magdum (45), Anant Patil and his daughters Aswhini and Harshada.
The injured were rushed to Sassoon hospital where they were discharged after treatment.
The Sahkarnagar police have arrested bus driver Gajanan Dhande (37) of Kolhapur, for rash driving. However, the accident apparently took place because of the unfinished road widening work near Walvekar Estate. The reason that the work has not been finished is the dispute between the Pune municipal corporation (PMC) and the Walvekars over the acquisition of their land.
The PMC has concretised the remaining part of the road and its level is slightly higher than that of the land which PMC wants to acquire and this has created a dangerous situation for vehicles.
