PUNE: Three-year-old twin girls died while their mother suffered serious injuries after a fuel tanker hit their scooter and ran over them at Vishrantwadi Chowk on Alandi Road around 4.30pm on Monday.
The police have identified the siblings - Shraddha and Sakshi Jha - and their mother as Kiran (38). According to the police, the father of the twins, Santoshkumar Jha (40) was riding the scooter at the time of the incident and escaped unhurt.
The entire incident was captured on CCTV camera. "The tanker had delivered aviation fuel at the Lohegaon airport and was returning to Mumbai via Bhosari," senior inspector Dattatray Bhapkar of the Vishrantwadi police said.
The officer said the family, originally from Bihar, are currently residing in Bhosari. "They were returning home after visiting a doctor in Yerawada," Bhapkar said. According to the police, both the vehicles involved were stationary at a signal. "When they resumed their journey, the truck brushed against the scooter due to which the girls and their mother fell under the truck. While the girls got crushed, Kiran suffered serious injuries," Bhapkar said.
Passersby, police said, picked the two girls and the woman and rushed them to a nearby hospital, from where they were shifted to Sassoon general Hospital. "We have detained the tanker's driver," Bhapkar added.
