3 Pune Municipal Corporation staffers issued notice for burning garbage in open

PUNE: The civic ward offices have intensified the vigil to check the involvement of garbage cleaning staffers in waste burning. Notices were issued to three staffers, who are deployed in the Ahmednagar Road area for cleaning work, after complaints were received against them.
All ward offices under the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have been asked to conduct meetings with cleaning staff and instruct them strictly against burning the garbage.
“We shall maintain the watch. Our sanitary inspectors will patrol regularly to check if the garbage collected by the staff is burnt abruptly. In addition to this, we will also seek daily reports from the sanitary inspectors,” said a PMC official.
Residents have been complaining of instances of the burning of garbage. Amey Korde, a resident of Baner Road, said people from his area often notice the waste being burnt in open fields. “We do not know who all are involved in it. However, we can see the smoke rising from open areas. The waste is usually burnt during night hours or early morning when there is less crowd on the roads”, said Korde.
Ajay Shinde, a resident of Sinhagad Road, said instances of garbage burning were more along the river. “The dry waste or garden waste is set on fire. There should be a mechanism for the daily pickup of such waste to prevent burning,” said Shinde.
