VILLUPURAM: High tension prevailed at Kadaiperikuppam village near Vanur after villagers tried to erect a bust of PMK former MLA and Vanniyar Sangam leader Kaduvetti Guru alias J Gurunathan without police permission. The police came to the spot and removed it in the wee hours of Sunday, much to the chagrin of the villagers.
However, the situation went out of control when the police had to resort to lathi-charge to disperse the villagers, including women, who resisted the police move.

According to sources, a section of Kadaiperikuppam villagers headed by PMK former secretary Muthu Kumaran had erected a bust of the erstwhile Vanniyar Sangam leader Kaduvetti Guru without police permission close to the PMK party flag. They also garlanded the bust.
On information, the Vanur police officials, including inspectors Ezhilarasi, Thirumani and Joseph Selvaraj, rushed to the spot and asked the villagers to remove the bust.
But the villagers did not pay heed to the police advice and consequently, the police had to lathi-charge the villagers to disperse them. In the melee, 10 villagers were injured.
But things took an ugly turn when two PMK functionaries – Anbarasu and Raghuraj – attempted to immolate themselves by dousing kerosene on them.
The police, however, acted swiftly and thwarted their attempt by dousing water on them.
They registered a case against 10 villagers, including Muthu Kumaran. They also arrested two villagers, including Silambarasan and Manikandan. The police have beefed up security in the village to avert any untoward incidents.
