PUDUCHERRY: Police on Tuesday arrested five youths on charges of driving recklessly and negligently under the influence of alcohol in
Puducherry. Their actions resulted in over a dozen people sustaining injuries and numerous vehicles being damaged in a popular tourist town.
The culprits were captured by the police after vigilant bystanders, who witnessed the speeding car colliding with several vehicles, pursued them on their motorcycles.
During the chase, the car's front left tire burst, completely detaching from the vehicle. Despite this, the driver continued to drive at an excessive speed.
The incident originated when the car, while on the ever-busy one-way JN Street, erroneously travelled in the wrong direction and collided with a motorcycle. Instead of stopping after the collision, the driver accelerated towards Raja Theatre in the town, driving against the flow of traffic.
The speeding car collided with multiple bikes and vehicles before crossing the Ajantha Signal and reaching Karuvadikuppam.
Subsequently, the car entered the Narikuravar colony, where the driver lost control and the vehicle plunged into a roadside pit. A considerable number of individuals who had been following the car in their own vehicles arrived at the scene and extricated the five occupants.
Upon the arrival of a police team, the individuals were taken into custody. They have been identified as Sunil, G Abhishek, and S Srinath from Pallikarunai, Chennai, as well as S Ebinezer from Nannangalam, Chennai, and K Dilip from Medavakkam, Chennai.
All of them range in age between 20 and 27 years. The injured were admitted to the Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital & Post Graduate Institute for medical treatment.
The police have charged them under sections 279 (rash driving or riding in a public way) and 337 (causing hurt by an act endangering the life or personal safety of others) of the Indian penal code and have initiated investigations into the incident.
