Dance drama ‘Thaimai’ explores motherhood through Hindu mythology

Salangai Cultural Academy is organising dance drama Thaimai, choreographed by Kalaimamani Jayashree Narayanan on June 5 at Kamban Kalai Arangam in Puducherry.
PUDUCHERRY: Salangai Cultural Academy is organising dance drama Thaimai, choreographed by Kalaimamani Jayashree Narayanan on June 5 at Kamban Kalai Arangam in Puducherry. The chief guest of the event is Padmashri awardee Dr Nalini P and the guest of honour is V Kalaiperumal, director of the Department of Art and Culture, Government of Puducherry. Kalaimamani Jayashree Narayanan is a dance guru and disciple of Rukmini Devi Arundale. With over 50 years of teaching experience, she has created wonderful teachers of dance to take forward the tradition. Jayashree runs her dance institution Salangai Cultural Academy. The drama which revolves around motherhood walks through characters from Hindu mythology such as Kunthi, Devaki and Vasudeva, for which she has taken the lyrics from Perialavar’s Pasuram, Yashoda, Yashodara and lots more. The drama will also brush on the instinctive motherhood that can be seen in animals. The drama also describes how mothers manage fighting siblings, and children fighting amongst themselves even after playing for a while together. Shivaprakasha Swamigal imagines that child gods, Ganesha and Muruga, fight amongst each other. Shiva the father cannot manage them while Parvathy tackles them deftly. The drama begins at 6.30pm.
