Senior RJD leader Ram Chandra Purbey was unanimously elected as the deputy chairperson of Bihar legislative council on Friday. Purbey assured the members of working for the better functioning of the Upper House in collaboration with the chairperson, Devesh Chandra Thakur.

PATNA: Senior RJD leader Ram Chandra Purbey was unanimously elected as the deputy chairperson of Bihar legislative council on Friday. Purbey assured the members of working for the better functioning of the Upper House in collaboration with the chairperson, Devesh Chandra Thakur.
Thakur said he believed the House will continue to get his guidance. During his address, Purbey talked about Lord Ram and Sita, Lord Buddha, Lord Mahavir and socialist leaders Ram Manohar Lohia and Karpoori Thakur.

He recalled the blessings of Karpoori and RJD chief Lalu Prasad and especially thanked CM Nitish Kumar and his deputy Tejashwi Prasad Yadav. He wished the "chacha-bhatija" duo will take the state to new heights. He recalled his tenure as a minister under Lalu and Rabri Devi.
After being elected to the council for the first time in 1986, Purbey, from Sitamarhi, continued to be its member for three consecutive terms till 2000. From 2000 to 2010, he was the member of Vidhan Sabha. In 2018, he again became an MLC. His tenure will end in 2024.
CM Nitish extended his greetings and said he had faith that both the chairperson and deputy chairperson will run the House efficiently. Tejashwi expressed his gratitude towards Purbey, whom he called as his guardian. "Our efforts will be to stand up to the faith of people and take Bihar to the zenith," he said.
Leader of opposition in the House, Samrat Chaudhary, called Purbey the real socialist. "The definition of a socialist, as derived from Karpoori Ji and Lohia Ji, is left in people like you," said Samrat. Others who also spoke on the occasion included parliamentary affairs minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary, Congress state president Madan Mohan Jha, CPI MLC Sanjay Kumar Singh, HAM(S) member and minister Santosh Kumar Suman, RJD MLC Sunil Kumar Singh and Congress MLC Prem Chandra Mishra.
