Patna: More than 1,000 students who have passed the postgraduate examinations of Patna University (PU) held between February 2023 and January 2024 will receive their coveted degrees at the university's convocation on Saturday. As many as 43 who topped the examinations of different courses would be awarded gold medals at the convocation.
PU registrar Shalini said the convocation being held after a gap of about two years will be held at 10.30am at Patna Women's College. Governor-cum-chancellor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar will preside over the convocation. Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti chairman Chamu Krishna Shastry will deliver the convocation address. PU vice-chancellor Ajay Kumar Singh will give away degrees to the scholars.
The scholars who had applied to receive their degrees at the convocation had to download three copies of their hall tickets made available on the PU website. They all collected their convocation costumes at the Jay Prakash Narayan Senate House on production of their hall tickets. The university officials and staff were there to facilitate the distribution of the costumes, including ‘angvastram' and ‘pagdee' (turban) among the scholars. A sizeable number of the recipients included girls. Among the 43 toppers, 30 girls would be awarded gold medals on Saturday.
It may be mentioned here that the old ceremonial convocation gowns which were supposedly the hangovers of the colonial powers were replaced by the Indian dress a few years back. The turban given to the scholars for the convocation reminded one of the great Indian educationist Madan Mohan Malviya.
