PATNA: Janata Dal (United), which carries a green flag, is going green in Bihar, literally. The party has decided to go for plantation to expand green cover and make people aware of the environment. With a target of one lakh plants, the party leaders and workers will fan out in the villages to enroll members of JD-U. "We have a target to enroll 50 lakh members and plant one lakh saplings," said Bihar JD-U president Vashisht Narayan Singh. The membership drive cum tree plantation campaign will be launched soon.
"Chief minister Nitish Kumar will kick off this unique initiative from some village very soon," said party spokesman Sanjay Singh.
Party president Singh said, "This is the first time that a political party is taking up the cause of environment and showing its concern for deforestation." In each block, at least 2000 saplings will be planted. The party will also develop a mechanism for the maintenance and safety of these plants for their survival. The party got the cue for sapling plantation from the concern shown by Nitish over very little green cover in Bihar. He lauded the age old practice at a remote Dharahra village in Bhagalpur district where people plant saplings of fruit bearing trees to mark the birth of girl child. He was so impressed with this practice that he visited Dharahra village twice in less than two years and encouraged rural people across the state to emulate this practice.JD-U has also asked all its MPs and legislators to get actively involved in this campaign. "From the next month this drive will be started. The tree plantation drive will motivate and encourage the people to love tree and play their part in protection of environment," Singh said.
