NAVI MUMBAI: The mutilated body of an unidentified woman was found stuffed in three plastic bags dumped under a tree on the Panvel-Uran Road around 1pm on Wednesday .
Senior inspector Sunil Bajare of Panvel city police station said that the woman had been butchered. “The head was severed and the torso was cut into multiple parts,“ said Bajare.
A few passersby called up the police after being alerted by a strong stench that had pervaded the air in the locality.
As the smell was very strong close to where the three bags had been kept, the police checked the bags and found the mutilated parts of a woman's body inside.
“We have sent the body parts to the rural hospital in Panvel,“ said an officer from Panvel police station. Bajare said they will look up details of missing persons at all police stations in the city besides Mumbai, Thane and Raigad. The police said that there are no CCTV cameras around the place where the body parts were found.
A case of murder has been registered under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.
