Nashik: The district and sessions court convicted two people and sentenced them to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment for being involved in smuggling of 40 kg of ganja in the Indiranagar area of the city on June 18, 2020.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs2 lakh each on the two convicts identified as Shafik Shah (30) and Gayashoddin Shaikh (34), both residents of Wadalagaon, Indiranagar.
According to the police, the convicts were found transporting the illegal substance in a car from the Wadala Pathardi Road in Nashik city.
After the police got information about the same, their car was intercepted and the duo was arrested. A case was registered against them under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The case was investigated by assistant police inspector Dharmaraj Bangar who was then attached to the Mumbai Naka police station. The case was heard in the court of additional district and sessions judge S B Bhansali.
Judge S B Bhansali, upon examining the statements of the complainant, witnesses and the circumstantial evidence submitted by the investigating officer, found the alleged drug peddlers guilty of the offence and awarded the sentence.Advocate Ravindra Nikam was the public prosecutor in the case. Commissioner of police Sandeep Karnik congratulated the investigating officer and others for ensuring conviction of the drug peddlers.
