NAGPUR: A speeding truck driver hit an autorickshaw at central MIDC Road on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in the death of the autorickshaw driver and injuring seven passengers, including a 12-year-old student.
The deceased, 34-year-old Murtaza Khan, was a resident of Rajiv Nagar. The injured passengers were rushed to a nearby private hospital. Police said that all injured had sustained minor injuries and were discharged on the same day after preliminary treatment.
Police said that the autorickshaw was heading to MIDC while the truck was heading from MIDC to a private company on MIDC Road. The complainant claimed that the truck driver was coming from the wrong side and hit the auto hard. However, police said that the truck driver was taking a U-turn when its rear portion hit the auto. The truck was overloaded with goods. The truck driver was driving rashly and had taken a sharp turn.
Cops said that due to the collision, the auto rickshaw turned over twice. Khan suffered head injuries and was stuck inside the crumpled portion of the auto. Nearby residents rushed and rescued all the trapped passengers. Khan was declared brought dead by doctors. MIDC police arrested truck driver Mohammad Sayyed Shabbir and he was sent to custody.
