MUMBAI: If all goes according to plan, a Param Vir Chakra memorial will be set up at Marine Drive in two years. At a meeting called by finance minister Sudhir Mungantiwar at Mantralaya on Tuesday, the project was discussed in detail and a two-year deadline set to complete it. Union defence minister Manohar Parrikar, Malabar Hill MLA Mangal Prabhat Lodha and education minister Vinod Tawde were present at the meeting.
Municipal chief Ajoy Mehta said the BMC plans to dismantle an old theatre at Marine Drive and instal the memorial there. The BMC will build and maintain the memorial.
The state government has already set aside Rs 5 crore for the project in the current budget. The amount will be carried forward to the next budget, said sources in the finance department.
There are 23 Param Vir Chakra awardees from the army and one from the air force. Maharashtra has four Param Vir Chakra awardees.
