MUMBAI: The National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) and Tifr have organized an exhibition entitled "Homi Bhabha and Modern Indian Art: The Collection of Tata Institute of Fundemental Research,'' between April 25 and June 5, 2011.
To be held at the NGMA, opposite the museum, it will remain open from 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. The exhibition will be inaugurated by Union minister of culture, housing and urban poverty alleviation,Kumari Selja on April 24,2011.
Consisting of over 250 artworks , the Tifr collection was assembled by the first two directors of the institute, Homi Bhabha and MGK Menon between the early 1950s and 1970s.
A press release issued by Tifr says that it was Bhabha who set the tone for acquisitions, securing a set percentage of the institute's yearly budget on art. It says that though the Tifr art collection has a well established reputation among the academic community, the works have been rarely been viewed by a wider public. "Hence it is only fitting that a substantial part of the collection be showcased at the premiere modern art institution of the country,'' it says.
