MUMBAI: Two Jaipur-based brothers accused of involvement in the IPL betting racket on Wednesday withdrew an application seeking quashing of their names from the FIR.
The brothers, who own a jewellery store in Jaipur, had last month filed before the Bombay HC two applications-one seeking anticipatory bail and another for quashing of their names from the FIR.
"The HC was likely to deliver the order in the petition seeking quashing of names, but they withdrew their application fearing it would be dismissed," said an officer.
The HC will decide on the anticipatory bail plea on Friday. A sessions court had earlier rejected their bail application.
Reportedly, a senior IPS officer is trying to help the two.
The two brothers are key to the investigations involving the Pakistani umpire
Asad Rauf in the
IPL betting racket. Duo had run away to Dubai immediately before police could arrest them. The two brothers had allegedly send expensive gifts to Rauf which was caught by the police at Delhi airport in June this year. Police believes their interrogations would lead them to spot fixing as they were also in touch with other cricket players and bookies including Virendra alias Vindoo Singh.
Additional public prosecutor Aruna Kamat Pai argued that there was ample material against the two petitioners not only for betting and gambling but in the entire conspiracy. The city crime branch in May busted a cricket betting racket and arrested 21 persons including Chennai Super king's principal Gurunath Meiyeppan. Due to the delay in arresting them is leading to delay in preparing the final chargesheet which was to take place end of this month.
