MUMBAI: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has successfully prevented smuggling attempts at Mumbai International Airport and apprehended four carriers, including two foreign nationals, in separate incidents. The seized contraband is approximately 7 kg of cocaine, with an estimated value of Rs 70 crore, according to an official statement.
The DRI's Mumbai zonal unit also discovered a firearm, along with five bullets, in possession of one of the arrested individuals who failed to provide legal documentation. The authorities have handed over the weapon to the local police. These incidents took place over the past few days, with one of the detainees being a female, as stated by the official on Tuesday.
The DRI team intercepted two individuals who were attempting to smuggle cocaine by concealing it within false compartments of their trolley bags. Additionally, two carriers were found to have swallowed drug capsules containing cocaine. They were immediately admitted to JJ Hospital, a state-run facility, where the capsules were extracted.
Further investigation led the DRI officials to seize additional quantities of narcotic drugs (cocaine) from a residence in Virar, located in the neighboring Palghar district. The official added that the contraband was smuggled into India from Nairobi, through the Delhi airport.
