Navi Mumbai: Legal notice given to Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) by Alert Citizens Forum for an eco-friendly immersion this Ganeshotsav yielded tangible results.
On the fifth day of idol immersion, special measures were taken at all natural lakes across Navi Mumbai. In accordance with clear order of the court, boards were installed at each immersion site, informing that it is mandatory to immerse Ganesh idols less than six feet in height only in artificial lakes.
Devotees followed the guidelines and responded positively to help mitigate water pollution. Additionally, the roads leading to natural lakes were completely closed. Citizens observed that senior officials of NMMC were personally present at the immersion sites, ensuring strict compliance with the orders of high court.
NMMC appreciated the Forum's action, which prompted the administration and residents to adhere to court directives. "When representatives of the Forum visited various immersion sites and verified the situation, it was clearly felt that this year's changes were positive and effective," said Forum head Sudhir Dani. According to the Forum, while it is challenging for the administration to implement eco-friendly decisions while respecting religious sentiments, the stance shown by NMMC is commendable.
Although there were initial difficulties, it is believed that the initiative will create a habit among the citizens in the coming years, making the immersion process smoother, environmentally friendly, preventing water pollution. The active role played by Navi Mumbai police and fire department staff was decisive in the success of the campaign. The Forum congratulated NMMC commissioner Kailas Shinde and Navi Mumbai commissioner of police Milind Bharambe. "The administration took effective steps after the Forum's notice, which has become a real strength of this fight," said Dani.
