MUMBAI: Insurance claims are pouring in thick and fast for the cars damaged by vandals during Thursday’s anti-SEZ protest in Navi Mumbai.Insurance firms have already been saddled with around 100 claims. Most vehicle owners, fortunately, have taken a comprehensive insurance policy that provides a cover for damage during rioting. The firms have also waived off the mandatory rule that ask policy-holders to file a police complaint for filing claims. The firms will now have to shell out around Rs 30 lakh.
“But the full picture will be clear in a few days as we are still getting claims,’’ New India Assurance development officer Mukesh Thakkar said.
Rioters went on a rampage, breaking windscreens and smashing up cars parked in front of Konkan Bhavan, Cidco Bhavan, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation office and the Reliance office at Belapur. Some cars and buses plying on the on Mumbai-Pune Highway were also targeted.“I took a new WagonR car just 15 days ago. The rioters have damaged the windows and dented the body badly,’’ Cidco employee N Muralidhar Gere said.“Most of the cars have damaged windscreens and replacing each will cost around Rs 10,000,’’ an auto dealer said. But it will be more expensive for the three Volvo buses; windows have been completely wrecked and insurers estimate that the repair job will cost around Rs 60,000. The vandals also looted audio systems of many cars after breaking their windowpanes. But insurers say the stereo systems can also be replaced as they, too, are covered by insurance (if cash receipts of the purchase are still there).
