MUMBAI: The Congress-NCP led Democratic Front government came in for a rude shock when one of their legislators Bhai Jagtap demanded that the BMC be bifurcated.
Jagtap made this statement at a meeting organised by the chief minister Ashok Chavan to discuss the problems of Mumbai.
He said that if the BMC was not competent enough to control malaria and clean up drains in the 21st century, then it should be bifurcated.
"In Mumbai, the revenue department is bifurcated and has two districts -- Mumbai city and suburbs -- and there are two guardian ministers. Why can't we bifurcate the BMC on the same grounds,'' he said.
But a section of
Congress MLAs said that this was Jagtap's personal view and not that of the Congress.
Most Congress, NCP and MNS MLA and MLCs from Mumbai have criticised the functioning of the BMC. Political observers said that the DF is eyeing the next elections and is criticising the BMC, which is controlled by the Sena-BJP.
