MUMBAI: A GRP constable was found dead in a CST-bound local near Ambernath early on Wednesday. Constable Sanjay Kulkarni (48) was attached to the Dadar railway police station and wasn't well for a long time. Prima facie, he is believed to have died of natural causes.
Kulkarni used to live at Dharavi with his sister. He was suffering from a low blood platelet count and was on sick leave for the past three months.
"We received information about a man lying in the luggage compartment of a CST-bound local around 5.40 am at Ambernath station.
The train had started its journey from Karjat an hour earlier," an officer said.
Cops are now trying to find out how Kulkarni landed up in luggage compartment.
"Escorting duty is in the ladies compartment and not in the luggage compartment. Besides, Kulkarni was off duty. As he had boarded the train early in the morning, there's a possibility that he was returning from a trip out of town. There's another possibility that he had boarded the same local the previous night when it was headed to Karjat, collapsed in it due to his illness and was only discovered the next morning," a senior official said.
