Meerut: At least four Army personnel were injured, two of them critically, in a blast at a shooting range in Saharanpur on Saturday night. The explosion occurred during routine drill, officials said.
"Preliminary information revealed that the Army personnel were training on drones with explosives attached to these. While loading, one of the drones exploded, injuring the Army personnel involved. However, the exact cause of the blast is yet to be ascertained," a senior police officer maintaining anonymity said.
According to an official, all the injured personnel were taken to Behat Community Health Centre (CHC) for initial treatment. Two of the injured — Deepak Kumar (27) and Suresh Singh (40) — were referred to district hospital. The other two, Praveen Kumar (30) and Pavitra Kumar (35), are undergoing treatment at Behat CHC and are stated to be stable.
The explosion caused panic at the site, and Army officials and local police rushed in and began rescue operations immediately. A senior police officer said the local police were not given much information about the incident and the Army is investigating the matter.
