Mangalore: Pejawar mutt will establish hostels at various places to provide free food and accommodation to economically weak and backward class students.
The first such hostel at Udupi will be inaugurated in a week. The hostel has 40 rooms and priority will be given to dalit and backward class students. The students will be given religious and cultural education.
Such hostels will also be set up at Mangalore, Shimoga and Dharwad said Pejavar mutt seer Vishwesha Teertha here on Monday.
He said a similar hostel is under construction in Mysore and will be inaugurated soon.
Under the community development programme, the mutt has taken up developmental activities in Naxal-affected areas of Western Ghats at a cost of Rs 20 lakh. The seer said tribals who have been denied benefits of progress even after 60 years of Independence have been provided with electricity and water. Such development work is going on in Agumbe and Sringeri areas, the seer noted. Attempts are being made to give financial aid to patients directly through hospitals also, he said.
Regarding Nethravathi diversion, the seer said it should be scientifically examined.
On this occasion, former president of Karnataka Kannada Sahitya Parishat donated Rs 1.1 lakh to the Hastinavathi Mandir.
