NIT-K launches mine safety training for industry professionals
Mangaluru: Department of mining engineering at National Institute of Technology-Karnataka (NIT-K), Surathkal, Monday inaugurated a six-day short-term training programme on health and safety & Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions (OSHWC) Code 2020 in mines.
The programme has 31 professionals from leading mining organisations across India undergoing structured training in mine health, safety management systems, and India’s unified Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020.
The inauguration ceremony was presided over by Prof Subhash C Yaragal, deputy director, NIT-K Surathkal.
Prof Harsha Vardhan, head of the department, attended along with deans, functionaries and faculty members.
Participants represent a cross-section of the mining sector, including Coal India Limited, Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), Western Coalfields Limited (WCL), JSW Steel (Goa and Ballari operations), Fomento Resources Private Limited (Goa), Karnataka State Minerals Corporation Limited (KSMCL), National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) — Panna, Kirandul Complex and Bailadila Complex — Vedanta Limited (Iron Ore), NRB Group and Ecomine. Several participants hold senior positions, including deputy general managers and equivalent roles.
All sessions will be delivered by faculty of the Department of Mining Engineering, NITK Surathkal. The programme covers mine safety engineering, risk assessment-based safety management systems under the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) framework, human factors in accident analysis, behaviour-based safety, noise measurement and control, machine-induced vibration, and computer-based statistical analysis of injury data. It will also examine the implications of the OSHWC Code-2020 for the mining sector.
Participants will visit NITK’s specialised laboratories, the Model Mine, the Digital Library, KIOCL’s Pellet Plant in Mangaluru and the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA).
