KSRTC junction to have traffic signal soon
MANGALORE: Motorists in the city can shortly brace themselves for one more traffic signal point at the KSRTC main bus station junction. Donated by Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited, the city traffic police authorities have completed the work of installing the signal and are waiting to commission it at the earliest.
The ongoing road concreting work taken up by MCC at this junction had delayed its commissioning so far.

Superintendent of police A Subramanyeshwara Rao told The Times of India here on Sunday that traffic signals installed at various places in the city are non-operational for various reasons beyond his control. "The department has installed two traffic signals at Karavali Circle and Kankanady Circle at an estimated cost of Rs 15 lakh," he said and added they will be commissioned once the road concreting work there is completed.
G V Subramanya, circle inspector of police (traffic) said the signal at KSRTC junction at Bejai would become functional once the work on installing interlock tiles there is completed. "MRPL donated the traffic signal equipment at a cost of Rs 5.6 lakh to the police department," he said. The signal will be synchronised with the traffic signal near the Mangalore City Corporation office for better coordination, he noted.
Asked about the problems faced by his department in commissioning the traffic signal at Bunts Hostel Circle, Subramanya said the city corporation has expressed its intent to concrete the road from this point up to Dr Ambedkar Circle (near Jyothi Talkies). Experts from BEL who installed the signal have pointed that circle in front of entrance to Bunts Alias Nadavar Mathr Sangha is a hindrance to free flow of traffic and must be removed.
MCC authorities have assured to remove the circle once work on concreting the road on above-mentioned stretch commences and build a memorial to compensate for the circle, to which the Sangha attaches a sentimental value, nearby. The traffic signal installed here was donated by Canara Bank at a cost of Rs 5.5 lakh and has been lying idle for the past one year. "We need better coordination on these issues," Subramanya noted.
