Madurai: Two guest workers died due to asphyxiation while cleaning a boiler in a paper mill situated near Palani in Dindigul district on Saturday.
The deceased workers were identified as M Noor Alam, 32, and Rampurus, 35, from Bihar.
According to police sources, Alam and Rampurus worked in a private paper mill situated in Pushpathur, Dindigul district. As part of maintenance work, the duo entered the boiler to clean it. Both workers became unconscious due to an alleged leakage of toxic gas from the boiler.
Other workers who noticed this rushed them to a nearby govt hospital in Madathupuram. However, the doctors declared them brought dead.
Police sent the bodies to the Udumalpet govt hospital in Tirupur district for postmortem. Saminathapuram police registered a case and are conducting investigations into whether proper safety protocols were followed by the mill management while engaging the workers to clean the boiler.
