MADURAI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued an orange alert to several districts in Tamil Nadu. IMD has warned that moderate thunderstorms and lightning with moderate rains were very likely at isolated places over Madurai, Dindigul, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Theni, Tiruvallur, Vellore, Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Salem, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Trichy, Namakkal, and Karur.
Meanwhile, Madurai city woke up to dark clouds on Tuesday, but the day temperature soared during the day. The city recorded 33 degrees Celsius while airport recorded the highest temperature of 36 degrees Celsius. The evening turned dark sooner with heavy dark clouds hovering over the skies. Drizzling was reported in many parts of the city.
The IMD has forecasted heavy rains for the region in the following days since a low-pressure area was likely forming over Lakshadweep and adjoining southeast and east-central Arabian seas around Oct 9. It was likely to move northwestwards and intensify further into a depression over the central Arabian Sea during the subsequent three days. Thunderstorms with lightning were likely to occur at one or two places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal areas between Oct 8 and 12, the forecast added.
