MADURAI: The crime branch police here have swung into action to investigate the case into the forged death certificates, which were issued by unidentified miscreants in the names of state minister for cooperation Sellur K Raju and Madurai South MLA, R Annadurai.
Police officers attached to city crime branch (CCB), led by inspector R Vivekanandan have been scrutinising the data and employees in Madurai corporation.
Meanwhile, the CCB officers have confirmed that the death certificates were original and issued by the corporation.
The CCB officers have been camping on the corporation premises from Sunday evening and the whole day on Monday. They also seized computer storage components. They suspect the involvement of seven regular and contract employees. However, police have not found any headway into the case. Meanwhile, corporation officials said that they have been extending all kinds of support to the police in facilitating the investigation. The culprits should be handled with an iron hand and provided with due police and departmental action. The incident has brought humiliation to the corporation, they rued.
Vivekanandan said that they have been scrutinising the systems, data content and corporation officials for the last two days. "We have confiscated a few systems, servers and memory units. The available data from the corporation are being screened to nab those involved. Despite our hard efforts we could not achieve any breakthrough in the case. We have shortlisted seven corporation officials and employees and have intensified the investigation," he said.
It was quite clear that some of the people have used the signature of V Yasodha Mani, city health officer, Madurai Corporation by logging into her computer. However, it was not yet clear on how the system was accessed and the signature was misused, he said.
