Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced that the Union cabinet had approved the declaration of Madurai airport as an international airport. The announcement comes ahead of his visit to Trichy on Wednesday.

Representatives of various trade bodies welcomed the announcement fulfilling their long-pending demand, saying it will open new global connectivity for the region and lead to all-round economic prosperity for southern Tamil Nadu.
