Kanyakumari: An integrated election control room was opened at the Kanyakumari district police office on Wednesday, to ensure a 100% transparent and fair assembly election.
According to police, the newly established facility serves as a centre for monitoring the electoral process, housing three specialised units: an election complaint cell, a social media monitoring wing, and a centralised police command post.
Speaking at the launch, Kanyakumari district superintendent of police R Stalin, said that the election complaint cell has introduced dedicated mobile numbers for every assembly constituency in the district. Residents are encouraged to report any violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), including illegal cash distribution or voter intimidation. Police have assured that citizens can share photographic or video evidence directly via WhatsApp, and the identity of informants will be kept strictly confidential.
Simultaneously, the social media monitoring cell will keep a round-the-clock vigil on digital platforms. Police officials stated that strict legal action would be initiated against individuals spreading defamatory content, misinformation, or any posts that violate election guidelines.
Speaking to TOI, Stalin said that social media monitoring was done by a special team of police. "We have set up an exclusive team of police who work 24x7 in three shifts consisting of eight hours. This team will monitor only election-related posts on social media; they will follow accounts of politicians based in Kanyakumari and will monitor and register FIRs if needed."
He further stated that they have dedicated specialised phone numbers for each constituency to receive complaints regarding MCC. Each station will have that number, and the public can use that to register their complaint.
