THRISSUR: Detailed investigations are on into the case of alleged torture of an eight-year-old boy who was staying at the Mariya Palana Society’s orphanage at Koratty here.
Police said they were interrogating the assistant warden of the orphanage, Jestin alias Ranjit, who had been accused of torturing the boy. They said the warden had told them that he had beaten up the boy for not studying but had not indulged in any major torture.
Koratty sub inspector P O Varghese said they had got some conflicting inputs. “The authorities of St Antony’s English Medium School, Koratty, said the child had attended the school last on March 26. The child has suffered major injuries but we have to find out why the complaint is coming up after two-and-a-half months,’’ he said.
Mariya Palana Society secretary Anto Thomas said the mother had taken away the child from the orphanage on April 2, and she had signed in the register to acknowledge this.
The district child welfare committee officials, meanwhile, visited the orphanage on Tuesday. “It appears to be a complex case. We also feel that a detailed inquiry is needed to find when the child suffered the injuries and who was the perpetrator,” committee chairman P O George said.
