Convict in POCSO case hurls shoe at judge in Wayanad

A convict hurled a shoe at a judge in Kalpetta Pocso court in Wayanad on Friday after he was sentenced to 25 years in prison for raping a minor girl. Arumughan (55) of Kadachikunnu near Meppadi threw the footwear, apparently in a fit of rage, at additional district and sessions judge S H Panchapakesan soon after the verdict was pronounced around 12 noon, police said.

KOZHIKODE: A convict hurled a shoe at a judge in Kalpetta Pocso court in Wayanad on Friday after he was sentenced to 25 years in prison for raping a minor girl. Arumughan was sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 2 lakh under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and other IPC sections for raping a 12-year old girl in 2014.
The shoe hit the judge on his arm while officials immediately overpowered the accused. The judge was provided first aid at Kalpetta general hospital for a minor injury.
Police have registered a separate case against Arumughan under IPC sections 228 (intentional insult or interruption to public servant sitting in judicial proceeding), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 355 (assault or criminal force with intent to dishonour person).
