KOLKATA: Water woes for Salt Lake Sector II residents continued on Thursday with supply being hit due to leakage in the pipeline of tank no. 5 underground reservoir and booster pumping station that supplies water to tanks no. 5 to 10 in Salt Lake.
With the household water reservoirs almost empty, several residents had to collect water from the civic body or private rented water tankers to meet their daily needs.

“The situation was such that we needed to hire a tanker on Thursday to fill up our reservoir. We hope the water supply will normalise soon,” said former judge of Calcutta High Court Soumitra Sen, a resident of CL block. “This water shortage has been continuing for the past one week. Residents are really suffering,” said Dipankar Mukherjee, another resident.
Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation water supply department officials said that KMDA was supposed to carry out work to repair the leakage from late Thursday night to early Friday. “One of the valves has to be replaced. This cannot be done during day time as water being supplied in the four shifts will be totally stopped. Normal supply is expected from Friday noon,” said a civic official.
Water supply in several blocks across Salt Lake Sector II including Sarat Abason, CK, CL, BL and adjacent localities have been hit for the past one week.
Residents said though civic authorities have increased overall supply across Salt Lake, water shortage still occurs during peak summer time as the demand increases manifold and household water consumption increases.
“We always face this problem every year and have to collect water from tankers. This year is no exception. More people, including people in guest house,s live in Salt Lake now as the overall water consumption of the township has increased,” said Dipanwita Bakshi, a resident of BL block.
