Kolkata: Rustication notice to three Aliah University students

KOLKATA: A disciplinary committee of Aliah University on Thursday recommended rustication of 3 students who had complained to the university of being assaulted on the campus and later lodged another complaint to the UGC against the deputy registrar and the way the probe was being conducted.On November 14, the three PG students were reportedly beaten up on the Park Circus campus. Of the three, Hamidur Rahaman is a second-year geography MA student and Nishan Mullick and Saikat Hossian are first-year PG students in the department of education.After the incident, the students lodged a complaint with the university. The university then formed a disciplinary committee to probe the matter.But the students were not happy with the probe and on December 13, lodged their complaint with UGC.On December 28, the disciplinary committee chairman sent a letter to the three complainants. The committee members observed that the complaint was false, objectionable and defamatory in nature and they should be rusticated with immediate effect. The three complaints were asked to appear along with their parents before the committee on January 9 to defend themselves.VC Abu Taher Kamaruddin said, “Steps will be taken according to the recommendation of the committee.”Hamidur Rahaman said, “If we are rusticated before we place our evidence, we will take legal help.”
