KOLKATA: In the first link of the city with the international Sunni jihadist group the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), four Hyderabad based engineering students were intercepted by the Hyderabad police last Sunday in Kolkata while they were on the verge of trying to cross over to Bangladesh in order to join the jihadist organization. The Indian agencies though said that they were neither in touch with the ISIS operatives nor did they know anyone who could help them cross the border.
"What is worrying though is the social networking sites that were used by the group to get indoctrinated in this form of jihadist movement," said an officer.
The incident though has led agencies to mount a watch in the city. "We have put all city forces on high alert after the Al-Queda, a terror group competing with ISIS threatened India a day ago. Any inflammatory material will be seized. The agencies are keeping a close eye on various literature available on the internet.
According to IB reports, the terrorist group had initially put special focus on Tamilnadu and Maharastra and follows new corporate publicity. The Indo-Bangladesh border, forever a porous one that has been exploited by ISI backed terror groups like HuJI and IM for past several years, now seem to have found a mention in the literature. "The very idea of the youths to cross over to Bangladesh must have come from literature released by the terror group even if we believe that still do not have manpower present in the borders," the source said.
They are attracting Muslim youths by creating a sense of anxiety with their advertisements in social media. This platform though is still allowing investigators to discover key information. For example, they can enter chat rooms anonymously. Otherwise, they are very closed groups. But there is so much conversation happening... the language is a challenge and often after a year of hard work, tracking and monitoring, you may realise, it is a false lead," the source added.
