Christmas goodies ready on shelves, but sales yet to pick up
KOLKATA: The shelves are overflowing bells, stars, Christmas trees each tinsel-decked item beckoning the buyer. But thanks to the meltdown and the Mumbai mayhem, Christmas shopping sales are yet to pick up in Kolkata.
When TOI visited the New Market central lines famous for being a paradise for Christmas shoppers the place wore a deserted look. "This is an age-old practice and the temporary stalls are set up here from December 1 to the 30 every year.

But this year, the sales are yet to pick up," said shopowner Wahid.
Dejected with the footfall, Wahid added, "Every year there are some trends in Christmas decorations. This year we are following the international trend of coloured bells, bells with chimes and metal bells. But with a fall in sales, it is disappointing. Around this time every year, buyers jostle to choose the best stuff."
The security at New Market has been beefed up with civic police guarding all entry points and CCTVs installed at every corner of the market. But it seems that the customers are not yet convinced that the security arrangement is foolproof and are staying indoors.
Ali, another shop owner, feels that people are thinking twice before spending money. "In previous years, all decorative items were equally in demand and cost was hardly ever a factor. This year we are selling the Snow Pine tree for the first time but because of its cost, people are shying away. Though some of the less expensive new items like reed with Santa and light and the new wall hangings are still fetching a good price, we're not very upbeat about the sales yet. I am sure people will come out by the weekend and the place will be its usual, with all the hustle and bustle."

The scene at the flower market however is quite encouraging. Ravi, working at an artificial flower-seller's shop, says, "Buyers are fewer in number but they are spending enough on artificial flowers. We have got new types for Christmas this year, like palm flower, tube flowers and flowers within small conch shells. All of these are reasonably priced. I am happy they are selling well and hope these bring back the happiness and normalcy in our lives."
The past few months have seen a decrease in the footfall at various malls as well. With Christmas and New Year celebrations round the corner, officials at various malls are optimistic that it's finally time for the trend to reverse. Starting this week, the various malls are also expected to begin their Christmas activities.
Sanjeev Mehra, VP operations, South City Mall, says in a positive tone: "Starting tomorrow, till Christmas, we plan to give our customers memorable and happy moments with choir performances, cakes and cookies."
