KOLKATA: A city court, on Friday, convicted two women brothel owners from Pune for trafficking women from South 24-Parganas and forcing them into the flesh trade. The two were arrested from Pune two years ago after South 24-Parganas police traced one of the missing women.
There was high drama associated with the arrest and rescue with police officers from Bengal being surrounded by local thugs, who wouldn’t allow the two ‘madams’ to be taken away.
Sunirmal Dutta, 15th additional judge of Alipore Court, convicted Saraswati Thapa (41) and Saheli Tamang (43) under Section 368 of the IPC and Sections 3,4 and 6 of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act. While Section 368 of the IPC deals with adduction and wrongful confinement that can lead to to 10 years in jai.
