Howrah: The suspect in last Saturday's Botanic Garden assault case was arrested from Allahabad on Monday and brought to Howrah on Tuesday. The victim, Jasleen Kaur, identified suspect Gopal Pandey, 35, at Botanic Garden police station.
Pandey, a resident of Danesh Sheikh lane in the Botanic Garden area confessed to police that he needed money to buy liquor and would wait inside the garden to pounce on visitors and extort money from them.

Women's groups submitted appeals to the Botanic Garden authority to beef up security for women visitors inside the garden premise. The garden authoruity, for its part, has handed over the CCTV footage on the day of the incident to police. But sleuths complained that the footage was not clear. A senior officer of Botanic Garden police station said sleuths are investigating why there weren't any security men of the Indian Botanic Garden (IBG) inside the premises, particularly in the area where the incident allegedly occured. Police is also investigating the role of policemen assigned on duty at the garden premise.IBG director Arvind Pramanik said, "We have already taken steps to improve security inside the garden premise. CCTV cameras have been installed and security staff have been appointed."- Rupak BanerjeeWe have sent a proposal for further beefing up security.
