KOLHAPUR: Four medical students of the Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj (RCSM) College were arrested late on Saturday night for allegedly ragging a junior in hostel premises earlier in the day.
The anti-ragging committee appointed to probe the incident is expected to submit a detailed report to the college authorities in the next seven days for administrative action against the suspects.
In the meantime, the college authorities have called the parents of the four students to discuss the issue.
The arrested have been identified as Rupendra Singh Meena, Rahulkumar Meena, Sumitkumar Rai, Rahul Jajoriya, all 22-year-old students from Rajasthan. The third year students were arrested in the case registered under section 325 of the Indian Penal Code and section 4 of The Maharashtra Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1999. They were presented before a local court on Sunday and were remanded in magistrate custody till December 21.
Amrut Deshmukh, inspector in-charge of Rajarampuri police station, said, "Initial investigation revealed that four youths were involved in ragging and harassing their junior. We have arrested them under various sections of the anti-ragging law. Appropriate action against them would be taken as per law."
The victim, a second year MBBS student of RCSM college was allegedly beaten up by his seniors on Saturday morning, while he was heading to the mess in the hostel premises at Shenda park area of the city. The victim, who has suffered a nose injury, was admitted in the hospital.
RCMS dean Jaiprakash Ramanand said, "We have called the parents of the students involved in the ragging incident. They will be in Kolhapur within two days and we will take action against the students after discussing the issue with the parents."
According to the hospital authorities, the three-member committee appointed by the dean has already submitted a detailed report on Saturday night. The dean is authorised to take appropriate action against the culprits based on the report and the report of the anti-ragging committee.
After the incident, the college authorities called a meeting of anti-ragging committee to investigate the incident and take action against the accused. The police complaint in this regard was lodged by Vijay Digambar Kass, rector of the hostel.
WHAT THE LAW SAYS Section 4 of the The Maharashtra Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1999 states that whoever directly or indirectly commits, participates in, abets or propagates ragging within or outside any educational institution shall, on conviction, be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years and shall also be liable to a fine which may extend to ten thousand rupees
Section 325 of the Indian Penal Code states that whoever, except in the case provided for by section 335, voluntarily causes grievous hurt shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to seven years, and shall also be liable to fine
