Kanpur: A 25-year-old man was feared drowned after he jumped into a river to create social media reel in Hamirpur district on Friday.
Dulichandra Pal of Gohani village in Hamirpur informed the police that his son Ramkumar had gone to take a bath in Virma river on Friday morning.
According to eyewitnesses, Ramkumar jumped off the bridge into Virma river to make a social media reel of the act. When Ramkumar did not come out of the river, his companions raised an alarm.
A huge crowd gathered at the spot and blocked the bridge to stage a protest. Police used mild force to control the situation. Sub-divisional magistrate Abhimanyu Kumar and naib tehsildar Dhanendra Kumar also reached the spot.
A search team was called from Lucknow to locate Ramkumar. He could not be tracked till reports last came in.
Inspector Umesh Kumar Singh said, "A 12-member team of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) from Lucknow is looking after the rescue operation. Ramkumar was employed at a private company in Gurugram and had come home on Thursday evening to celebrate Diwali."
