KANPUR: On reaching city on Saturday after two weeks of camping in Delhi, Sriprakash Jaiswal received a warm welcome from his fellow party-men after becoming a Union minister for state for coal and statistics in UPA Government.
The caravan of Jaiswal began from Ghantaghar around 4 pm and passing through the busy thoroughfares of the city, culminated at the Tilak Hall, the central office of the Congress in the city.
Jaiswal, believed to very close to the Gandhi family, started his journey by garlanding the statue of Jawaharlal Nehru. However, he did not bother to do the same to Bharat Mata statue, adjacent to the Nehru statue.
He was also welcomed by traders. Awadhesh Gupta, a trader, said: "Though Jaiswal has become minister for coal, we still believe he can be very influential in the development of the city."
Another supporter Faraz Ansari said they had started the ground-work for the upcoming assembly elections, scheduled to be held in the state in 2012. The black cat security cover of Jaiswal had a tough time controlling the mob of his followers.
Jaiswal, after reaching Tilak Hall, thanked the people of Kanpur for re-imposing their confidence in him for the third time. He said he would continue to work for the benefit of the people of the city.
