Consumers frown as eggs become dearer

The price of eggs has gone up by Re 1 per piece in Jamshedpur, affecting consumers and wholesalers. The price increase has impacted middle-income families, bakers, vendors, and egg vendors in retail markets. The price hike has led to a decrease in egg consumption, with some families only consuming eggs on alternate days. It has also affected the sale of eggs during the festive season, with many people avoiding buying the item. The average consumption of eggs in the city has decreased from 21 lakh pieces to 19 lakh pieces.

JAMSHEDPUR: Consumers are unhappy as the price of eggs has gone up by Re 1 per piece in Jamshedpur. The price has increased in both the wholesale and retail markets from December 22, affecting the middle-income segment families, bakers and vendors among others.
Amrita Bose, a homemaker from Sonari, said boiled eggs are a must on the breakfast table for their family, but due to the price hike, they are consuming eggs only on alternate days.

“In winter, eggs are also used to make cakes at home quite often, but this Christmas and New Year the situation is not the same," she said.
Rohit Sahu, an egg vendor in Sakchi market, said that till November, eggs were sold at Rs 6 per piece in retail markets, but as the price has gone up in the wholesale market, he is forced to sell it at Rs 8 per piece.He pointed out that during this time of the year when parties and picnics add to the sale of eggs, many are shying away from buying the item. Raju, a wholesaler of eggs, said, “Usually, the consumption of eggs in the city is around 21 lakh pieces, but the figures this year is close to 19 lakh on an average for the past few days.”
