Man Singh (SMS) Hospital has been performing a high volume of complex craniovertebral (CV) junction surgeries for the last many years and now it will share its technique by launching an advanced course on the CV surgery from Saturday.
CV junction is the junction of the cranium (skull) and the vertebral column (spine) and it lies in the upper part of the neck.
It is a challenging surgery as the region is highly mobile and is responsible for almost all the movements occurring in the neck including the nodding movements.
“There are a variety of diseases that can occur in this part of the body such as congenital lesions, tumours, rheumatoid arthritis and tuberculosis. The surgery in this region is complex and demanding because it is a narrow corridor with very important structures such as the brainstem and the vertebral arteries lying in the close vicinity. A single error is often life threatening,” said Dr Rashim Kataria, senior professor (neurosurgery), who is also the organising secretary of the two-day advance course on the Cranio- vertebral junction surgery 2023.
He said the surgery requires precision and proper planning with beforehand sound knowledge of the anatomy of the region which is often abnormal.
The course is important as it covers cases, which are even more complex such as cases with abnormal course of vertebral artery, cases where the c1-c2 joints are more oblique. Guest faculties from Mumbai, Trivandrum and Chandigarh along with faculties from SMS alumni group are part of the course.
The course aims at not only residents and new neurosurgeons but also senior colleagues who need to refine their CVJ surgery skills.
