JAIPUR: A visit to Mansa Mata temple in Jhunjhunu district ended on a tragic note for a group of pilgrims when eight of them, including two toddlers and six women, were killed and 27 others injured, as a tractor trolley overturned and fell into a gorge.
According to police, the pilgrims were from Rajivpura village in Jhunjhunu and were returning home after visiting the temple on Monday evening at 6.30pm, when the mishap took place.
Panic prevailed at the spot as many people were trapped under the trolley, which was carrying 35 people.
A large number of locals gathered at the site and started rescue work. The injured were rushed to different hospitals in Jhunjhunu and Sikar. "The driver, in a bid to save fuel, put the tractor on neutral gear on a slope, causing the vehicle to overturn," Jhunjhunu SP Mridul Kachchawa told TOI.
Some 27 injured were undergoing treatment at various hospitals in Jhunjhunu and Sikar, he said. Minister of state Rajendra Singh Gudha visited a community health centre at Udaipurwati, where some of the injured were admitted.
