Vikarabad set to get drinking water
VIKARABAD (RR DISTRICT): Drinking water supply to Vikarabad town will be a reality soon. With the government agreeing to supply 5.4 million liters per day for this project, all the bottle necks have been cleared. Even though pipe-laying works for supply of Manjeera water from Singur to Vikarabad were completed few months ago, water allocation was not sanctioned with various stake holders objecting to it.

Recently handloom minister Gaddam Prasad and Vikarabad MLA brought the matter to the notice of chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy. In response to it, government recently issued a GO (No 344) allocating water for the project. "The public health department has to pay an amount of Rs 2 crore for the water connection to metro water works department now. As soon as modalities are finalised, the town will get drinking water" Rajaiah, municipal deputy executive engineer told STOI.
Foundation stone for the Manjeera drinking water scheme at a cost of Rs 31 crore was laid by then chief minister YS Rajasekhar Reddy. But later metro water works expressed its inability to allocate water for the project. Even the neighboring Medak district political leaders opposed to it saying that it would be an 'incessant robbery' of water from the district to Hyderabad and now Ranga Reddy district.
Vikarabad with a population of 60,000 and situated 70 kms away from Hyderabad is pinning hopes on Manjeera water project as the Shiv Sagar tank which is the major water resource for the area has dried up totally. "In addition to impending Vikarabad satellite township project, Manjeera water project can put the town on the fast track to development" N Gireesh a local said.
