HYDERABAD: In a fresh case of a nude WhatsApp call fraud, a contestant in the upcoming
Telangana assembly election ended his life in Nizamabad district on Sunday morning after being blackmailed to pay up or face the ignominy of the morphed videos being uploaded on social media.
Y Kannaiah Goud (29) hanged himself at his home in Sai Nagar while his family was away, police said.
Goud had filed his nomination from Nizamabad (urban) constituency under the banner of Alliance for Democratic Reforms Party. While his affidavit stated he was engaged in 'private service', cops said Goud made a living as a vegetable vendor and doubled up as an activist.
"Prima facie it looks like a case of a 'honeytrap' by cyber cons. On Saturday, he got a video call from an unknown number. When he attended it, there was a nude woman on the other side. The caller recorded Goud's face and created a morphed vid eo. The accused then started to blackmail him to cough up Rs 10 lakh," said B Sanjeev, SI of Nizamabad IV Town.
