HYDERABAD: Like every other morning, Nawaz Khan left his Kishan Bagh residence for work completely unaware of the mayhem just around the block. Within minutes he found himself in the midst of a frenzied mob.
Suddenly, police opened fire and Khan began running, only to fall in a pool of blood a few meters away. “My brother-in-law fell as a bullet had pierced his leg,” said Mohamed Irfan, a relative.

Both Nawaz Khan and his brother Mohammed Mahmood, who was also injured in the firing, were admitted at Care Hospital. Doctors said both victims underwent surgeries and are now out of danger.
Altogether eight victims who sustained bullet injuries during the police firing at Kishanbagh were admitted to separate city hospitals. While six are currently undergoing treatment at Premier Hospital, Nanalnagar, the other two have been admitted at Care Hospital, Banjara Hills. The condition of all the eight is out of danger, hospital sources said.
Authorities at Premier Hospital where six of them are undergoing treatment refused to talk to the media.
Anxious family members said they were shocked when they heard about the police firing and could only manage to help the injured after the firing stopped. “It was madness out there. Several of our houses have been damaged, but policemen were few and could not control people from battling each other,” said a relative of one of the victims.
Witnesses said the narrow lane made it impossible for those caught in the mêlée to escape and, therefore, fell prey to bullets, which they later learnt was fired by a para-military force.
During the day, mayor Majid Hussain along with MIM workers, including Moazzam Khan and Pasha Quadri, visited the patients.
