HYDERABAD: Syed Maqbool Zuber, 44, a Nanded based Indian Mujahideen(IM) terror module operative, who was convicted in a series of blast cases, murder and attempt to murder cases died undergoing treatment on Thursday. He is currently serving a prison term at Cherlapally Central Prison, Hyderabad.
In October 2023, the NIA court at Delhi sentenced him to life imprisonment for his role in the 2013 bomb blast at Dilsukhnagar in 2013 that left 18 people dead and over 130 injured and he was lodged in Central Jail, Delhi.
In November 2023, he was shifted to Cherlapally on a transit warrant to serve a prison term in connection with the cases reported in Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana.
A key operative of the IM module, he was also accused of involvement in blasts across the country during 2006 and 2007. He was also convicted in a murder case reported in Nizamabad district and Afzalgunj, Hyderabad.
A Chronic rheumatic heart disease (CRHD) patient, he underwent Double Valve Replacement surgery after being shifted to Cherlapally. He was then diagnosed with acute renal failure and even underwent dialysis. After recovery, he took treatment for decreased vision and hypertension and he was frequently visiting NIMS and Gandhi hospitals for consultations. On July 21 night, as he suddenly fell sick, he was rushed to NIMS and then to Gandhi hospital for further treatment. While undergoing treatment at Gandhi, he was declared dead on Thursday.
Cherlpally police registered a Custodial death case (196 BNSS). A PME was conducted on his body by a team of experts in the presence of a Magistrate and it was handed over to his family later. While health issues are suspected to be the cause of death, the exact cause of death would be known from the PME report, police said.
