HYDERABAD: The
Congress has put a plan in place in
Telangana to regroup itself in the hope that it will help build the much needed momentum for the party nationally, taking a leaf from its performance when Andhra Pradesh was a unified state contributing to the formation of UPA-II. The grand old party hopes to resurrect itself in Telangana with the high-profile entry of
Telugu Desam Party (TDP-Telangana) working president Anumula
Revanth Reddy in presence of party vice-president Rahul Gandhi on November 9, most probably in Delhi.
According to Telangana, Pradesh Congress Committee sources, indications are that Rahul Gandhi is likely to be elected party president after organisational polls on October 26 and may take over reins from his mother on October 30.
“Revanth’s admission was to have happened on October 30, but after he cited an auspicious time on November 9, Rahul agreed. Since elections to Himachal Pradesh assembly are scheduled for November 9 and Rahul would have to stay put in Delhi, the joining ritual will take place in the national capital,” a party office-bearer said. An upbeat Congress is making all out efforts to make Revanth’s joining a big event to extract maximum mileage.
The state
BJP on Saturday huddled into a meeting following speculations that senior leaderNagam Janardhan Reddytoo might take the Revanth Reddy route and walk over to the Congress. Nagam told STOI that he has no such intentions, but it became clear that the Revanth episode has both the TRS and BJP on their toes. At the meeting, BJP leaders took stock of the situation following the imminent move of TDP floor leader A Revanth Reddy into Congress and its implications for state politics. State president K Laxman, national general secretary Muralidhar Rao, BJP floor leader G Kishan Reddy and former Union minister Bandaru Dattatreya attended the meet. According to sources, BJP leaders are worried by the recent developments at a time when the party is trying to emerge as an alternative to the TRS in state. National leaders have been giving top priority to the state and making all efforts to strengthen it. “At this stage, Revanth Reddy’s joining the Congress definitely worries us to some extent. We are watching the developments closely,” a party senior leader said. Nagam, meanwhile, denied the rumours. “The news reports are false. I have not spoken to any Congress leader and have not thought of leaving the BJP,” he told STOI.
