SDPI protests move to drop cases against BJP, Sangh Parivar functionaries
Belagavi: Hundreds of Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) members staged a protest in the city on Tuesday, opposing the state govt's decision to withdraw criminal cases against individuals linked to the BJP and Sangh Parivar. Protesters alleged that cases involving hate speech and communal violence were being dropped, calling the move "unfortunate" and urging the govt to act against those disturbing social harmony, regardless of political affiliation. Addressing the gathering, SDPI district president Mouzamja Mullani said 54 cases were registered against 18 persons linked to the BJP and Sangh Parivar across the state, but the Cabinet on May 22 decided to withdraw them. He termed the move condemnable and a threat to law and order. He cited cases against leaders, including C T Ravi, Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, Pramod Mutalik, Chaitra Kundapur and Andola Swamy, alleging that protecting such individuals weakened the legal system. SDPI leaders said while the withdrawal of cases against innocent activists was welcome, shielding those accused of hate speech was unacceptable. Protesters submitted a memorandum to the govt through the deputy commissioner. The protesters submitted a memorandum to the state govt through the Deputy Commissioner.
